OUR HISTORY
A LEGACY OF DEDICATION AND GROWTH
Founded by Michael Burkinshaw, Continuing Generational Excellence
M & D Burkinshaw Estates is a testament to a family's unwavering commitment to the land and agriculture. The story began with Michael Burkinshaw, who carried forward a legacy that spanned three generations of dedicated service to Hartley Mains Farms in Seaton Delaval. Managing a sprawling expanse of 2,500 acres and leading a skilled arable workforce, Michael's journey is one of passion, hard work, and building a thriving business from the ground up.
THE SPARK OF INDEPENDENCE
A Leap of Faith in 1993
In 1993, opportunity knocked, and Michael embarked on a journey to become self-employed as a crop spraying contractor. Supported by his wife, Denise, who skilfully handled administrative tasks and accounts, the couple managed this new endeavour while raising their two young daughters, Nichola and Sarah. To fuel their aspirations, they made sacrifices like selling prized possessions, including Michael's beloved Cavalier SRI car, to raise the funds necessary to purchase their first machine.
RISING STARS
From Start-up to Industry Recognition
Within just three years of establishing the business, Michael, Denise, and their daughters were honoured with the NAAC Contractor of the Year award in 1996. Their commitment, determination, and hard work were already paying off. The business flourished, leading to the hiring of their first employee in 1998 and the acquisition of dedicated premises to operate from.
EXPANDING HORIZONS
Diversification and New Frontiers
The year 2002 marked a significant milestone as the family's ambition bore fruit. They secured their first Farm Business Tenancy of 249 acres at Whinney Hill Farm.
In 2008, the family's expansion continued as Nichola had graduated from Newcastle University and was deploying her agronomy expertise to build a thriving customer base from scratch. Whilst Sarah, a graduate of Kirkley Hall agricultural college, skilfully managed day-to-day arable operations, making crucial decisions and overcoming challenges.
CULTIVATING GROWTH
From Strength to Strength
By 2014, the Burkinshaw family's efforts had blossomed, overseeing 800 acres of land and steadily expanding their modern farm machinery inventory. Simultaneously, they covered an impressive 25,000 acres annually through contract crop spraying across Northumberland.
CELEBRATING MILESTONES
A Journey of Success and Sustainability
Currently, M & D Burkinshaw Estates successfully cultivates over 1,100 acres of arable land with a strong focus on self-sufficiency. The Contract Crop Spraying business, which began in 1993, celebrated its 30th anniversary in June 2023, a testament to years of dedication and expertise.
BEYOND FARMING
Diverse Endeavours for a Worthy Cause
The family's commitment to growth and community extends beyond the fields. Windmill Farm Christmas Trees, which started as a small venture, has grown exponentially year after year. The expansion now includes a festive shop complete with reindeer and sleigh, contributing funds to the family's chosen charities.
M & D Burkinshaw Estates stands as a testament to the Burkinshaw family's unwavering dedication, innovation, and tireless efforts over the years. From a humble beginning to an enduring legacy, their journey continues to inspire and shape the future of agriculture and community.
